Privacy policy

ChorePoints is a chore and reward tracker for families, run by Adrenaline Technology ("we", "us"). This policy explains what the app stores, why, who else can see it, and how to get rid of it.

We wrote this to be read, not to be survived. If anything here is unclear, write to us at privacy@adrenalinetech.com and we'll explain it in plainer words.

The short version

  • A grown-up makes an account with an email address. A child can have one too, but only one their parent sets up for them, and it uses a username — we never ask a child for an email address.
  • A child in the app is a profile: a name you chose, an icon, a colour, and a three-icon PIN. That's it. No birthday, no photo, no email, no location.
  • We don't sell anything about you or your family, and we don't let anyone else use it to advertise to you.
  • You can delete your account yourself, from the Account page, at any time.

What we store

Your account. The email address you signed up with, a hashed password (we never store the password itself), and, if you sign in with Google, the identifier Google gives us for your account. We also keep a few counters that stop the app being abused — how many failed sign-ins, password-reset emails and family-join attempts have happened recently.

A child's account, where a parent has set one up, holds a username they chose together and a hashed password. No email address. The app needs an address in that slot for technical reasons, so it makes one up from the username, ending in .invalid — an ending reserved so that it can never be a real address anywhere. Nothing is ever sent to it, and nothing could be.

Your family. The family name, the family's three-icon join PIN, the time zone you picked, and which approvals your family requires.

Profiles. For each person in the family: the name you typed, the icon and colour you chose, whether they're a parent or an approver, and their three-icon PIN if they have one. We ask for nothing else about a child — no date of birth, no age, no photograph, no contact details.

What the family does in the app. Chores and rewards you create, including anything you type into a name, a note or a link; who claimed and completed what; and the points ledger that explains every balance.

Feedback. If you use the feedback form, we keep your message, your email address and which page you sent it from, so we can reply.

Server logs. Our web server keeps an access log of requests made to the site, which includes the IP address the request came from, and the application keeps its own diagnostic log. Both are kept for 14 days and then deleted automatically. We use them to keep the site running and to spot abuse, and for nothing else.

What we don't do

  • We don't sell your personal information, and we don't share it for anyone else's advertising.
  • We don't ask children for personal information, and we don't let a child create an account.
  • We don't use tracking cookies.

Analytics

We count page views on our public pages only — the home page, the sign-in and registration pages, the FAQ and the support page — using our own self-hosted Umami installation. It sets no cookie, it does not store IP addresses, and it counts a visit only while you are signed out. Nothing inside the app — no chore list, no rewards page, no profile page — is measured this way.

Who else sees your information

We keep this list short on purpose.

  • Google, if you choose to sign in with Google. Google tells us an identifier and your email address; we tell Google nothing about your family.
  • Resend, which delivers our emails (confirmations, password resets, invitations and notices). They receive the address we're sending to and the contents of that email.
  • Nobody else. ChorePoints runs on our own server, which Adrenaline Technology operates itself. The application, its database and its analytics are not on anyone else's cloud.

That's everyone. No advertising networks, no data brokers, no analytics companies, and no cloud hosting provider — the server is ours and the analytics run on it.

Cookies

One essential cookie keeps you signed in. It lasts 14 days if you tick "keep me signed in" and otherwise expires when you close the browser. Signing in with Google briefly sets one more cookie that Google requires to complete the sign-in. We use no advertising or tracking cookies.

Children's privacy

ChorePoints is built for families, and it is meant to be set up and run by a parent or guardian. A child appears in the app as a profile a grown-up in their family created, holding a name, an icon, a colour and a three-icon PIN. That works on its own — a child needs no account to use the app.

A child can also have an account of their own, so they can sign in on their own tablet — but only one a parent sets up for them. A child can never create one. A parent does it from inside their family, with their Parent PIN, and chooses the username and the first password together with the child.

We never ask a child for an email address, and we never collect one. That is the point of the username: an address we were never given cannot be leaked, cannot be sold, and cannot become a way for anybody to reach your child. The app has to put something in the address slot for technical reasons, so it makes one up from the username ending in .invalid, an ending reserved so that it can never work anywhere. We send nothing to a child, ever. Notices about a child's account — a forgotten password, a locked account — go to the parent who set it up.

The parent stays in control of it. From inside the app, with their PIN, they can set a new password for the child or delete the child's account outright. They don't need our help and they don't need to ask us. If you would rather we did it, or you want a whole family removed, write to privacy@adrenalinetech.com and we will.

Grown-ups' accounts are for people 13 and over, and our Terms of Service say so. Creating a family, or holding the Parent role in one, is for a parent or guardian who is 18 or over.

We ask for a date of birth before anyone can sign themselves up, and somebody too young is told so instead of being shown the form. We ask for the date rather than asking "are you 13 or over?", because a question that tells you which answer gets you in isn't really a question. The answer stays in your browser and is never sent to us — we don't keep it, and we have nowhere to keep it, because at that point there is no account to attach it to.

That screen is a rule, not a lock, and we would rather say so than imply more: anyone determined to get past it can. So the promise that matters is still the other one — we do not knowingly let a child under 13 sign themselves up, and if we find out that one has, we delete that account and everything on it. If you believe that has happened, write to us and we will remove it.

Because a parent creates a child's profile and chooses what goes in it, a parent can also change or remove it at any time from inside the app. If you believe a child's information is in the app and you want it removed, write to us and we will remove it.

We do not show personalised or interest-based advertising on any screen a child can reach, and we do not let anyone else collect information about your family through the app.

How long we keep things

We keep your family's information for as long as your account exists. Server logs are deleted after 14 days.

A child's account is kept only while the family wants it. There is not much of one to keep — a username, a hashed password and the record of which parent set it up — and a parent can delete it outright from the child's profile page, with their PIN, without asking us and without waiting for us. Deleting it removes the account and frees the username; the child's profile, their points and their history stay with the family, because they belong to the family rather than to the sign-in. If you would rather we did it, or you want the whole family and its history gone, write to privacy@adrenalinetech.com.

We don't automatically delete accounts that have gone quiet, and we are not going to tell you we do. A family that stops using ChorePoints for a season and comes back in September should find their points where they left them.

One thing worth knowing about deleting your account. Deleting your account removes the account itself, your membership of each family, and any pending requests to join one. It does not delete the family's profiles or its points history, because those belong to the family rather than to you — if other grown-ups are still using that family, deleting your account would otherwise erase their children's records too. If you want the whole family and its history gone, write to privacy@adrenalinetech.com and we'll remove it.

The app will also refuse to delete your account while you are the last parent who can approve anything in a family, because that would leave the rest of the family locked out. Hand that role to somebody else first, or ask us.

Your choices

  • See and change what's stored: nearly all of it is visible and editable in the app.
  • Change your email address or password: on the Account page.
  • Delete your account: on the Account page.
  • Ask us anything else, including deletion of a whole family: privacy@adrenalinetech.com.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we'll update the date at the top. If a change actually matters — if we start collecting something new, or start showing ads — we'll say so in the app rather than hoping you re-read this page.
